A Beneficial Relationship: Why Universities Should Consult With A Social Media Agency
With the commencement of social media outlets like Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter recruiting college coaches has become even more easier. You might ask yourself why social media? The reason is with social media coaches do not have to travel half way around the country to communicate and pitch to a 5 star recruit why they should come to the school. Instead they can talk through Facebook and save a whole lot of money. Although social media agencies do not necessarily assist colleges attract recruits. There are a a handful reasons why that should be up for consideration.
As you may or may not now social media agencies help a company construct their brand through social media networks. With that said the same can be done for university athletics for a particular sport. Especially colleges that have a hard time enticing recruits because of their location, reputation, or lack of winning history. Say for example the Washington State Cougar football program they haven’t been relevant in years and their recruitment numbers indicate that. If they were to go to a social media agency that agency can really help the university advocate the positives of the program and university through social networks.
For instance say there a 4 star wide receiver you would love to have on your team and you decide to connect with him. You tell him how he is wanted at your university and how it would be a great fit basically selling to him the university. Imagine how much easier it would be if you had a social media agency redo your page and your football site. Although I am not saying its a guarantee he will enroll in your school but if he sees how much you take pride in the likeness of your school. It might intrigue the recruit enough to make a possible consideration.
Just like sales all you need is a/an interest and it is downhill from their depending on how great of a recruiter you are. If colleges were able to consult with social media agencies about their various social websites it might even the field for the smaller schools. Lets be honest how many people from the North really want to go to school in Wyoming. With that said if they had an appealing site and an attractive social page that might change the resemblance of the school. Resulting in the chance of actually signing higher rated recruits more of a reality.
With that said I think any university looking for a competitive edge in recruiting should consider the possibility of consulting with a social media agency. Obviously you would have to make sure your not violating any rules before even thinking about it. If it were legal to consult with an social media agency then I think every school should think about it. It is amazing how sites like Facebook and Twitter are not only changing the way businesses functions but it also changes the way colleges recruit. I wonder how technology will alter recruiting in the next ten years.
